The strangles vaccine is given into the upper lip of the horse, using a special applicator. The first two (primary) vaccinations are given 4 weeks apart, and a third vaccination is then needed after 3 months. For high risk horses, repeated vaccination is required every 3 months to ensure that the horse is protected against strangles.
With any vaccine protection does not usually reach 100%, however with this particular vaccine it may not work in up to 25% of cases and it is also very important that the horse has not had any exposure to strangles just before vaccination.
Please contact your veterinary surgeon about your circumstances and they will advise whether using this vaccine would be suitable.
